PS4 controller drift — that maddening ghost input where your character moves on its own — is one of the most common repair questions we get in our Fresno shops. The good news: it’s almost always fixable, and often without buying a new controller. Here’s what actually works.
Drift happens when the analog stick sends a movement signal even though you’re not touching it. Over time, the tiny potentiometers inside the stick module wear down, or dust and grime build up around the contacts. It’s a hardware issue, not something you did wrong — but it does get worse the longer it’s ignored, and a controller left drifting tends to fail completely within a few more months of regular use.
Before opening anything, try a software recalibration. On PS4, go to Settings > Devices > Controllers > Adjust Warning Area, or plug the controller into a PC and use a site like Gamepad Tester to see exactly how far the stick is drifting. Sometimes a fresh calibration and a firmware update resolve minor drift entirely, and it costs nothing to try first.
Dust and skin oil around the base of the stick is one of the most common causes of drift, and it’s the easiest to fix. Power off the controller, use a can of compressed air around the stick base, and gently work a cotton swab dampened with isopropyl alcohol around the collar where the stick meets the housing.
If compressed air doesn’t fix it, the contacts inside the stick module likely need a proper clean. This requires opening the controller shell and cleaning the potentiometer contacts directly, or in more worn cases, a full stick module part swap, which is why it’s the most common controller repair we do in our Fresno shops — usually same-day, and far cheaper than replacing the whole controller.
If recalibrating and cleaning haven’t stopped the drift, the module itself has likely worn past the point cleaning can fix. Bring it into a game console repair shop and we’ll swap the stick module directly rather than having you replace an otherwise perfectly good controller.
