How to Fix the PS5 Controller Drift

A PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, representative of common controller repairs

PS5 DualSense drift can turn a tense match into a frustrating one — your character creeps forward or your aim pulls sideways with zero touch on the stick. It’s an extremely common repair request in our Fresno shops, and the fix depends on how far the wear has progressed.

Why the DualSense Drifts

Like every modern controller, the DualSense uses small potentiometers to read stick position. Repeated use wears down the internal contacts, and dust or oils around the stick base make it worse. Sony’s controllers aren’t immune just because they’re newer — drift shows up on PS5 controllers just as often as PS4 ones, sometimes even sooner given how much more sensitive the haptic sticks are.

1. Update Firmware and Recalibrate

Start with the software fix: connect the controller to your PS5 or a PC and run a stick calibration. On PS5, check Settings > Accessories > Controllers for calibration options, and make sure the controller’s firmware is fully up to date first — Sony has pushed several updates specifically addressing stick sensitivity since launch.

2. Clean the Stick Base

Power down the controller and use compressed air around the base of each analog stick, followed by a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol along the collar. This clears out the dust and oil buildup that’s often the real culprit behind early drift, and it’s worth doing even if the drift seems minor.

3. Professional Contact Cleaning or Module Replacement

If cleaning doesn’t fully resolve it, the potentiometer contacts likely need a deeper clean or the stick module needs replacing outright — both require opening the controller and, in the case of a module swap, soldering. This is the point where most customers bring it in rather than risk damaging the housing or voiding whatever warranty is left.

When to Bring It In

If firmware updates and cleaning haven’t stopped the drift, the stick module has worn past what cleaning can fix. Bring it into a game console repair shop and we’ll replace the module directly — usually far less than the cost of a new DualSense.
