Your phone touches your face, your hands, and every surface you set it on — and studies have found phone screens carry more bacteria than a toilet seat. Here’s how to clean yours safely without damaging it.
Skip household glass cleaners, bleach wipes, and anything with ammonia or abrasive particles — these can strip the oleophobic (fingerprint-resistant) coating on your screen over time, leaving it smudgier than before you started. Also avoid soaking the phone or spraying liquid directly onto it, even for a quick wipe-down.
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from any charger before cleaning, especially around the charging port where moisture is most likely to cause a problem.
A dry microfiber cloth handles most everyday grime just fine. For fingerprints and smudges, lightly dampen the cloth with water or a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution — never spray liquid directly onto the phone itself.
Use a soft, dry brush or a can of compressed air at a low angle to clear lint from the charging port and speaker grilles. Avoid inserting anything sharp or metal, which can damage the internal connector pins and turn a cleaning session into an actual repair.
Cases trap as much grime as the phone itself, sometimes more. Remove it periodically and wipe down both the inside of the case and the phone underneath — a case that looks clean on the outside can be surprisingly grimy where it touches the phone.
Apple and most Android manufacturers now say a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe is safe occasionally for disinfecting, but daily use can wear down screen coatings faster than normal use would. If your screen starts feeling less smooth after months of daily disinfecting, that coating is what’s wearing away.
If cleaning turns up a port that won’t charge reliably or a speaker that still sounds muffled afterward, that’s likely a hardware issue rather than debris. Bring it in for a port or speaker repair rather than continuing to dig at it yourself.
