How to Fix iPad Folio Keyboard Not Working Issues

An iPad attached to a folio keyboard case

A Smart Keyboard Folio that suddenly stops responding is one of the more common iPad accessory complaints we hear about — and it’s usually a connection issue rather than a dead keyboard.

1. Check the Smart Connector contacts

The small gold contacts on both the iPad and the folio can accumulate dust, pocket lint, or light oxidation over time, which weakens the connection just enough to cause dropouts. Gently wipe both sets of contacts with a dry, soft cloth and reattach before trying anything more involved.

2. Detach and reattach firmly

Sometimes the folio simply isn’t seated correctly, even if it looks attached. Fully detach it, realign the Smart Connector pins carefully, and reattach with firm, even pressure until it clicks into place with a solid connection.

3. Restart the iPad

A software glitch recognizing the accessory is a genuinely common cause, especially after an iPadOS update. Restart the iPad with the folio detached, then reattach it once the iPad has fully restarted and reached the home screen.

4. Check for interference

If you’re also using a Bluetooth keyboard or have another Smart Connector accessory nearby, conflicting inputs can cause erratic or intermittent behavior that looks like a keyboard failure. Disconnect other input devices to isolate whether the folio itself is really the problem.

5. Update iPadOS

Accessory recognition bugs are occasionally fixed in software updates that don’t get much attention in the release notes. Check Settings > General > Software Update if the issue started recently, especially right after a new iPad or iPadOS version.

6. Test with a different iPad or folio if possible

If you have access to another compatible device or folio, testing the pairing helps determine whether the problem is the iPad’s Smart Connector itself or the keyboard. This one test saves a lot of guessing before bringing it in for a tablet repair.

If it’s hardware

If you’ve worked through all of the above and the connection still won’t hold, the Smart Connector port on the iPad or the contacts on the folio itself may be physically damaged. That’s a repair job rather than something more cleaning or restarting will fix.
