How to Extend the Life of Your MacBook

A MacBook is a serious investment, and with a little care it can easily stay fast and reliable for many years. Most of the machines we see slowing down aren’t broken — they’ve just been missing a few simple habits. Here’s what our technicians recommend to every customer.

1. Treat the battery kindly

Your battery ages fastest when it’s constantly at 100% or drained to zero, and when it gets hot. Turn on Optimized Battery Charging (in System Settings → Battery), and try to keep everyday charge somewhere in the middle rather than always topped off. If your MacBook is already shutting down early or showing “Service Recommended” under battery status, the battery is worn — and it’s very replaceable.

2. Keep it cool

Heat is the enemy of every laptop component. Use your MacBook on hard, flat surfaces — a bed or couch cushion blocks the vents and traps heat. In Fresno summers, don’t leave it in a hot car or in direct sun. If the fans are running loud and constant, dust may be clogging the vents (more on that below).

3. Don’t let storage fill up

A nearly full drive makes macOS sluggish because the system needs free space to work. Try to keep at least 10–15% of your storage open. Empty the Trash, clear out old downloads, and offload large files you don’t need day to day.

4. Keep macOS and your apps updated

Updates aren’t just new features — they include security patches and performance fixes. Staying current keeps your Mac safer and running smoothly. Restarting every few days also clears out memory and resolves a surprising number of slowdowns.

5. Clean the vents and keyboard

Dust builds up inside over time, making fans work harder and the machine run hotter. A gentle exterior cleaning helps, but if it’s been a few years and the fans are always spinning, an internal cleaning by a technician can bring temperatures — and noise — right back down.

6. Back up your data — before you need to

Hardware can fail without warning. Set up Time Machine with an external drive, or use a cloud backup, so a spilled coffee or a failed drive never costs you your photos and files. If the worst does happen, our data recovery team can often get it back — but a backup means you never have to sweat it.

When to bring it in

If your MacBook is running hot, the battery dies quickly, it’s slowed to a crawl, or it’s had a run-in with liquid, a professional tune-up or repair can add years to its life for far less than the cost of a new machine. Our team handles battery replacements, cleaning and diagnostics, storage upgrades, liquid-damage repair, and more — see our full computer repair services.
