How Do You Check Battery Health on an iPhone Without Setting It Up

A hand holding an iPhone

Buying a used iPhone and want to check battery health before committing to setting it up with your Apple ID? There are a couple of ways to get a read on battery condition without fully activating the phone.

Why this matters before setup

Once you sign in with your Apple ID and set up the phone, you’re more committed to the purchase — and if the seller won’t let you return it after that point, you want battery health confirmed first, especially for a private sale where there’s no store return policy backing you up.

1. Use the setup assistant’s diagnostic mode

Some iPhones let you access limited diagnostics during the initial setup screens before fully signing in, though Apple has reduced how much is accessible this way in newer iOS versions. It’s worth trying, but don’t count on it being available on every device or iOS version.

2. Ask the seller for a screenshot

Before buying, ask the seller to send a screenshot of Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging directly from their still-active phone. This is the most reliable way to see the actual maximum capacity percentage without touching the device yourself, and a legitimate seller won’t hesitate to send it.

3. Check the charge cycle indirectly

A phone’s model year combined with visible wear — a swollen back, a slow charge, warm-to-the-touch behavior even at low usage — can hint at battery condition even without official numbers. These are rough indicators, not a substitute for the actual reading, but they’re useful red flags.

4. Bring it to a shop before finalizing

If the seller is willing, a quick stop at a repair shop before the sale is finalized can get you an actual battery health reading and a broader hardware check in a few minutes. It’s worth the extra step for anything above a low-value, casual purchase — we run this kind of pre-purchase check regularly as part of our iPhone repair services.

Already bought it and the battery isn’t great?

If you skipped the pre-purchase check and the battery turns out to be degraded, a replacement is usually straightforward and affordable relative to what you saved buying used in the first place.
