A cracked or flickering screen after your phone takes a splash is one of the most common water-damage symptoms we see. Even “water resistant” phones aren’t waterproof, and screen damage from moisture needs a different approach than a dropped-and-cracked screen — treating it the wrong way in the first hour can turn a fixable problem into a much bigger repair.
The first 30 minutes matter most. Power the phone off immediately if it isn’t already off, and resist the urge to keep checking if it still works — every power cycle while there’s moisture inside risks a short circuit that turns a simple fix into a full board repair. Dry the outside gently with a soft cloth and avoid pressing any buttons in the meantime.
Rice is a myth that can make things worse by leaving dust and starch inside the ports. If you want to use a desiccant, silica gel packets work better, but the real fix is professional drying and cleaning of the internal components, not a bag of rice on the counter — rice mostly just makes for a good story, not an effective repair.
Never plug in a wet phone to check if it charges — that’s the single fastest way to short out a logic board that water alone might not have damaged. Wait until the phone has been professionally dried and inspected before it ever sees a charging cable again.
Watch for discoloration under the glass, dark spots or blotches spreading across the display, flickering or lines that weren’t there before, or a touchscreen that responds inconsistently. These are all signs that moisture has reached the display connector or the screen itself, and they tend to get worse the longer the phone sits untouched.
The longer water sits inside a phone, the more corrosion builds up on the internal connectors, and corrosion is what turns a one-part repair into a multi-part one.
